On July 25, 2017, I led a class to a room of real estate agents at MBH Settlement Group, L.C. located in Reston, Virginia. During the talk, I covered how every company and especially real estate agents are media companies that should create and develop content in various ways specifically for their target market. I introduced them to “Dave” the real estate agent. I also explained how developing and creating a strategy and executing on it is similar to baking a sweet potato pie. This will be the first of many classes that I hope to have on how small businesses, professionals and real estate agents can be media companies.
Update: An updated version of this class was given September 17, 2017 for Champion Title in Woodbridge, Virginia.

This 2 minute drill provides a simple and quick tip for entrepreneurs and business owners to run their business better and more efficiently. Key thing to remember from this video is that YouTube and Facebook (become more so) are both places that people search for videos and as a small business owners (really any business owner) you want to increase your likelihood of being found. The best way to do this is to post your video natively on each of these sites and then into your website. I still believe YouTube is a better option because it’s more of a search engine but that could change.
Takeaway – Place your video on YouTube & Facebook 1st and then embed it on your website, blog, other social media site, etc.
PS – If you need an example, check it out above.
Search Engine Optimization or SEO is a way to get “free” or “organic” placement on search engines for targeted keywords. For local business, visibility is important and often business owners want to increase their visibility in order to rank for keywords that people search for on search engines like Google, Yahoo or Bing. When potential customers search for local business like a personal trainer or a dentist or a plumber, they go to search engines like Google. With the help of our Outreach Mama, here’s 14 reasons why SEO is the the best marketing strategy for local businesses.

Digital marketing is all the rage. Entrepreneurs and business owners are told that they must have a website and a Facebook page, an Instagram account and don’t forget about Snapchat. They must invest in SEO and also make sure they are posting every day. But why? I speak a little about digital marketing in this 20 minute discussion for the 100 Entrepreneurs organization at Fort Belvoir in Northern Virginia. I spoke about why I started Blue 16 Media, what it means and why every company is a media company, the current state of digital marketing and how entrepreneurs and business owners can leverage digital marketing to help their business and how CEO Blog Nation (CBNation.co) is a perfect example of Blue 16 Media’s philosophy.
100 Entrepreneur’s Mission is “to provide wounded veterans and their family members with much needed information about entrepreneurship, industries, business functions and requirements, and opportunities to build their own businesses or to find a meaningful career in an industry of their choice.”

For your marketing strategy, it is important to understand these 3 different ways for you to show up on the first page of Google. Budget permitting, you should try to show up in all 3 sections.
Here are the 3 sections:
1) Pay Per Click (PPC) / Google Adwords section / Search Engine Marketing (SEM)
2) Organic (SEO) section
3) Maps or Google Plus Page section
This video will tell you a little about Google My Business and how you can show up on the first page of Google.
Business blogging is not a thing of the past, it’s a thing of the present and the future. There are millions of blogs and blog posts across the internet and it’s not an option to start one, it’s a requirement. There have been numerous algorithm changes to Google search which are prompting business owners, entrepreneurs, startup founders and CEOs to start their blog to reach the Long Tail search results. Even social media sites like LinkedIn are providing an opportunity to develop content to reach millions of people.
Social media is everywhere these days. For business it is almost essential to have your brand and name out in public through the use of social media. One of the best social media sites to take advantage of when it comes to business is LinkedIn. As a niche website, LinkedIn allows business owners, entrepreneurs, and even employees to connect with other businesses all over the world. Making use of B2B, marketing, networking and a variety of other things falls into your lap when you begin your journey on LinkedIn.
This might be news to a lot of business owners but it’s a reality in this day in age. Whether you are a developing the newest smartphone widget or you own something “non-digital” like a lumber company or a landscape business, or a coffee shop or you are an electrician, I have news, you too are a digital company.
One of the things that has always bothered me about some business owners and entrepreneurs is that sometimes we fall into the trap of waiting for our competition to make a move and then we want to make it. Sometimes we are snooping at our competitors Facebook page or maybe you receive a newsletter from them and you see that they are starting to use Pinterest or Snapchat, so now you want to use Pinterest or Snapchat. Maybe they are starting to do lunch and learn events and then you want to copy what they want to do.
Whatever happened to being bold and trailblazing?
A few years ago, Mark Zuckerberg, founder and CEO of Facebook, made an announcement that Facebook was a mobile company. Thereafter, the company executed and developed it’s mobile strategy better than most other internet companies.
But with Facebook’s success and growth on the desktop, why would he make such an announcement? It’s because I bet he saw the trends of people. I imagine he saw the rise in mobile usage and smartphones and decided that he would “skate to where the puck is going” and make a bold bet on what saw the future would be. I imagine that’s what ledFacebook to purchase Instagram and even try to purchase Snapchat.
Why you may ask?
I go back to the beginning of this post. While your industry might be slow to change or your competitors might not be doing it. Understand the most important thing–your target market is using it, a lot. I’m not even sure exactly who your ideal customer is but I’m willing to bet they are at the very least on Facebook. If they are younger than 30, they are probably on Instagram or Snapchat. If they are Generation X, they are probably looking for you on Google. Even if they don’t have social media accounts, I know Baby Boomers who are watching videos on YouTube.
So, again, why should you be a digital company? Because your target market is using digital.
